Shopping – simple rule:
When you buy products low-processed without additions, you avoid eating such substances as glucose-fructose syrup, artificial flavours, carrageenan, stabilizers, thickeners, palm oil, preservatives.
E471 – Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids (glycerol monostearate – GMS, glycerol distearate) are mainly produced from vegetable oils, although animal fats are sometimes used and cannot be completely excluded as being present in the product. They are used as an emulsifier in a great variety of foods. One of the most common applications is to give ice cream and whipped cream its smooth texture.
It can be found in: Black Forest gateau mix, cakes, hot-chocolate mix, aerosol creams, shaped crisps, quick custard mix, packet dessert topping, dehydrated potato and sponge puddings. And the production process is very simple – it is similar to making soap.
In my opinion E471 is not toxic, however it is labelling as “E”. The impact on the body of this additive while is not particularly mentioned. Still, given the results of the research, I can agree that the damages from the E471 are minimum. Just remember that these food ingredients have high calories and fat content. Therefore, to use a large number of products containing E471 is undesirable.
