When you buy products low-processed without additions, you avoid eating such substances as glucose-fructose syrup, artificial flavours, carrageenan, stabilizers, thickeners, palm oil, preservatives.
Almond milk is a plant milk manufactured from almonds with a creamy texture and nutty taste. It contains neither cholesterol nor lactose, and is often consumed by those who are lactose-intolerant and others who wish to avoid dairy products, including vegans. It is traditionally consumed through much of the Mediterranean.
It can also be made at home using a blender, almonds and water. The basic method of modern domestic almond milk production is to grind almonds in a blender with water, then strain out the almond pulp (flesh) with a strainer or cheesecloth. Almond milk can also be made by adding water to almond butter.
If unfortified, almond milk has less vitamin D than fortified cows’ milk. Because of its low protein content, almond milk is not a suitable replacement for breast milk, cows’ milk, or hydrolyzed formulas for children under two years of age. Almond milk is rich in heart-healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats, while the fat in cow’s milk is primarily saturated fat.
Many types of non-dairy milk, like almond milk, contain added sugar. Ingredients like cane sugar or cane juice on the ingredient list indicates that sugar has been added to almond milk.
One reason why people may choose almond milk is because they believe it has a significant amount of almonds in every serving. But how many almonds are in a glass of almond milk? How about do it yourself?
